Programable LED cube DIY

As we push forward we enter into a technological world that is driven by convenience, balanced by the need to reduce waste, and tempered by a global economic crisis. National borders are dissipating, cultural differences are thankfully losing fervor and today's savvy citizens are asking their leaders more difficult questions than ever before. Our species and our world are evolving. Even our language continues to expand as quips like 'lol' and 'smh' shape our way of communicating and interacting.

So let us close the door and get intimate with a fast growing acronym: DIY (Do It Yourself). Yes boys and girls we are talking about putting those desires for technology of yours this month into your own hands. So pucker those lips up and feast your eyes on this DIY project!!

This Tech Love article has been brought to you by Instructables.com, THE site for discovering a weekend DIY project that rocks!! When I first heard about this site I knew I had to introduce it to our wild and raging fans...

I knew you heathens and jackals of the technological persuasion would be able to imagine hours of glee and pleasure programming your own light shows right at home! Buy one, make one, redesign it, alter it and show it off! This LED cube is offers unlimited variations!! Show us your version.

Tech Love

May, 2012

Amazing things come in small packages.  For this month’s Tech Love article we will be discussing the potential of some incredibly tiny dots. Not the kind of dots that have you searching for the Shout, instead I am talking about a beautiful, young, tiny technology that has my heart thumping and my palms sweating. Quantum Dots are nanostructures of a semiconducting nature; effectively speaking they are like microscopically small batteries and lights.

Without getting into the specifics of a field that requires more game than Bernie Mac, let’s discuss the properties and its current applications as we satisfy our love for knowledge. These dots store energy and can omit them in different wavelengths based on their size. According to NanocoGroup PLC, a world leader in the mass production of high quality quantum dots: “The smaller the dot, the closer it is to the blue end of the spectrum, and the larger the dot, the closer to the red end. Dots can even be tuned beyond visible light, into the infra-red or into the ultra-violet.” [reference] This storage and delivery system allows for an amazing array of applications, these dots are like the Kama-Sutra for energy storing and delivery.

Now I know you neo-nerds are probably wanton to say: “So now that we have seen some of that hot technological allure, please tell me how we can put it to use.” Well hold onto your optical mouse this next peek at these dots potential is going to drive you beyond control! The University of Buffalo has been studying the effects of quantum dots in the bloodstream of primates for over a year. This takes us yet another step closer to nanomeds becoming a reality. I simply salivate at the idea of an injection of microscopic antibodies that could guarantee a cancer-free life or heal a mortal wound before my very eyes! Now just imagine a world where you can rest easier knowing your child is unlikely to come home with scrapes and cuts that need tending!

While research is still being done on the many different ways that this technology can be implemented it is most commonly used in the production of various photovoltaic cells, which you might remember from our previous article. Photovoltaic Cells are used in the production of solar panels.

Thin-film Photovoltaic cells

Tech Love
Thin-film PV cells
As the need for cost effective, renewable energy increases so to does the drive for advanced forms of photosynthesis. With the ability to produce thin malleable solar cells we can harness more of the sun's power in a variety of unique ways.

According to an article written by Gil Knier, this process of converting light into electricity was originally discovered by "a French physicist, Edmund Bequerel, in 1839" (Article). Today there are "Third Generation Photovoltaic Cells" that open up a whole new realm of possibilities and applications. How about outdoor synthetic plants that collect solar energy and deliver it straight to your house? Just the artistic aspects of such a technology gets me excited. So while this emerging technology gets me all hot and sweaty with giddy excitement, it should easily spark a little flame of interest in even the desensitized, unresponsive, vegetative dweebs!

Get this information while it is still hot! Photovoltaic Cells are listed as one of the "Top Ten Technological advances of 2011"  and has the imagination of even the Great Einstein behind it. Who would have known that "green" technologies could be heart pounding excitement? To paraphrase a great artist: "Just imagine the people living life..." so green!

What are your crazy ideas for the use of Solar Cell Technology?

Now Bill knows determination. I side with him on this one. So keep your ears and eyes open for news on Depthx a new "Digital Wall Mapper" system. Should NASA pursue this idea the opportunity for spin off gadgets seems staggering. Imagine taking a full 3-d picture of any room at anytime. Wahoo!! Now that is what I call an awesome idea!

Beginning this week we will be posting a periodic story that deserves a "Tech Love" consideration. If you think all things tech are desirable than feast your eyes on these glistening objects of machine and magic! Think you have a great pick of a sexy machine that charges your imagination, send it in and we might just stick it on our locker doors for safe keeping.

We here at Squiggle truly hope you take this knowledge to better yourself and those around you.
